Prayers are flooding in for a rising young football star after a horrible swimming accident occurred over the weekend. Bobby Roundtree, who currently plays as a defensive end for Illinois, reportedly suffered a severe spinal injury after going swimming near his home in Largo, Florida.

According to CBS News, he was hospitalized at Mease Countryside Hospital on Sunday evening for surgery. No other details regarding the incident were immediately released.

Roundtree is an extremely talented player on the field — and a highly-respected person off of the field. In response to the sad news, Rountree’s coach released a statement praising the pass rusher and requesting prayers for his recovery.

"Bobby Roundtree is exactly what you want in a student-athlete," said Illinois coach Lovie Smith in a statement. "He is a hard worker, dependable, a dedicated student and a leader. This is devastating to his teammates, the entire Fighting Illini family, and his family and friends. We will give Bobby all the support possible as he battles through his recovery. Please keep Bobby and his family in your thoughts and prayers."

It is unclear how this accident will impact Roundtree’s sports career in the long run. The 21-year-old athlete led his team in sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (12.5) last season, reported the New York Post. He has been a prime player throughout his college sports career, making him a top prospect for the NFL in upcoming years.

Faith Family America joins the public in praying for Roundtree during this difficult time. Share your thoughts and prayers in our Facebook comments.
