The news was confirmed on Thursday that a former world leader has passed away. Bob Hawke, the former popular Prime Minister of Australia, has passed away.

Hawke was 89 years old at the time of his death. Americans would remember him for being constantly talked about in the media due to Australia’s obsession with him. He won four elections in Australia and served as the PM from 1983-1991.

Hawke’s wife, Blanche d’Alpuget, released the sad news.

She said, “Today we lost Bob Hawke, a great Australian- many would say the greatest Australian of the post-war era. I and Bob’s children, Sue, Stephen, Rosslyn and stepson, Louis, and his grandchildren, will hold a private funeral.”

She continued, “Bob Hawke and Paul Keating and their governments modernized the Australian economy, paving the way for an unprecedented period of recession-free economic growth and job creation.”

“Among his proudest achievements were large increases in the proportion of children finishing high school, his role in ending apartheid in South Africa, and his successful international campaign to protect Antarctica from mining,” she continued.

She concluded, “He abhorred racism and bigotry. His father, the Reverend Clem Hawke, told Bob that if you believed in the Fatherhood of God then you must also believe in the Brotherhood of Man. Bob would add today the Sisterhood of Women. Bob was dearly loved by his family, and so many friends and colleagues. We will miss him.”

According to CNN, the former PM was known affectionately as “Hawke.” They reported that he was the party’s longest-serving and most electorally successful leader.

Several people have taken to social media to talk about Hawke's impact on Australia and worldwide:

Please be praying for Bob's family during this time. Share your prayers here! Do you remember hearing about him? In other recent news, a supporting actor just tragically died at 42 after taking his own life. Please keep his family in your prayers as well.
