Last year, tensions reached an all-time high between the United States and North Korea. President Trump and Korea's Kim Jong Un were going back and forth in a heated argument, with many people in the U.S. fearing the seemingly irrational behavior of Kim Jong Un.
In a surprise turn of events, President Trump was able to get through to Kim Jong Un. In a historic meeting, the two were able to talk and figure out a plan for North Korea's denuclearization. Though many citizens were unsure if these plans would actually amount to anything, Kim Jong Un spoke out this week about the results of that conversation.
Kim Jong Un told South Korean President Moon Jae-in that his previous conversation with President Trump has helped to bring geopolitical stability in the region. On Wednesday morning, President Trump took to Twitter to talk about the positive future between the U.S., South Korea, and North Korea.
He wrote, "Kim Jong Un has agreed to allow Nuclear inspections, subject to final negotiations, and to permanently dismantle a test site and launch pad in the presence of international experts. In the meantime there will be no Rocket or Nuclear testing. Hero remains to continue being returned home to the United States."
After, President Trump made a surprise statement. He revealed that North Korea was showing interest in hosting an Olympic Games!
He wrote, "Also, North and South Korea will file a joint bid to host the 2032 Olympics. Very exciting!"
In the 2018 Winter Olympics, many people thought that North Koreans wouldn't even participate. However, they ended up sending some of their athletes to join forces with South Korea. Now, it looks like the two countries may be joining forces in an even more elaborate way- by hosting an entire Olympic Games!
Tokyo will be hosting the 2020 Olympics, while Los Angeles and Paris are going back and forth between the 2024 Games and the 2028 Games. If President Trump is correct, South Korea and North Korea will be joining forces to place a bid for the 2032 Summer Games.
The 2018 Winter Games were in Pyeongchang, South Korea. At this point, it is too early to tell if the bid for 2032 would be physically located in North or South Korea. Either way, the comment by President Trump implies that there will be continued stability in that region, as those Olympic Games are around 14 years away!
After President Trump made the statement, the Internet lost their minds. Hundreds of people began praising President Trump for his work with North Korea and saw this as a sign of peace. Others said that hosting the Olympics in North Korea would be extremely reckless.
