
The national shortage of baby formula has been a concern for lawmakers in the House after a Michigan manufacturer closed down due to health concerns. This was also linked to two infant deaths. Advocates are calling on the Food and Drug Administration to openly investigate the manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories. We look at how Abbott’s grip on the market for baby formula, amounting to about 20% of all formula distributed in the U.S., contributed to the crisis. David Dayen, executive director of The Executive Editor, suggests that reforming the system where only a few formula brands are subsidized by the government can help to combat the monopolization which has caused this crisis.
