America is currently mourning the five lives lost in a shooting that took place on Friday afternoon. 45-year-old Gary Martin opened fire at Henry Pratt Company, a manufacturing location in the suburb town of Aurora, Illinois in Chicago.

As previously reported, six responding police officers were also injured during an intense shootout with the attacker. In addition to the five victims, the gunman was also shot and killed by police.

It was initially known that Martin, the shooter, was a former employee at the plant. A motive was not immediately released, but authorities discovered more information as the investigation moved forward. According to USA Today, Martin had just been fired hours before the shooting occurred.

"I hate that we have to use the term classic workplace shooting, that pains me to do so, at this time I don’t know. Again, we can only surmise that with a gentleman who’s being terminated that this was something he intended to do," the Chief of Police said.

It is unclear why Martin, who worked for the company for 15 years, was terminated. No other employees were reportedly fired that day.

This story is still developing. More details are expected to be released in the upcoming days.

Many well-known names have expressed their support for the victims since the shooting took place. Among those names are President Donald Trump and Rev. Franklin Graham.
