A Raleigh, North Carolina resident who was hoping to become a pastor was charged with murder after waking up in bed to discover that his wife had been stabbed multiple times. He claimed he had taken too much cough medicine, which caused him to commit the murder.
Matthew Phelps, 29, called 911 Friday after 1 a.m. to report that he had killed his wife. Lauren Phelps, also 29, was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead, The Daily News Reported.
“I had a dream and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor,” Phelps told a 911 dispatcher.
“How? How? How?” the dispatcher said.
“There’s blood all over me, and there’s a bloody knife on the bed,” Phelps said. “I think I did it. … I can’t believe I did this,” he said.
Phelps said he had taken Coricidin, a cough and cold medicine. He said it made him “feel good,” and because he couldn’t sleep at night.
Bayer, the makers of Coricidin, said in a statement, “Bayer extends our deepest sympathies to this family. Patient safety is our top priority, and we continually monitor adverse events regarding all of our products. There is no evidence to suggest that Coricidin is associated with violent behavior,” according to Heavy.com.
Phelps worked at a landscaping company, and was studying missions and evangelism at the Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Pineville, Kentucky, and was studying to become a pastor. His wife taught Sunday school, ABC News reported.
The couple had wed recently in November. On Valentine’s Day, Lauren wrote on social media a tribute to her husband that read, “I’m so blessed to have you forever and always. God did good and knew exactly what he was doing. Our paths were perfectly planned for us to meet at the perfect time after learning the perfect lessons!”
Police believe that the murder was not a random act, according to ABC News. Phelps has been charged with murder and is being held in Wake County Jail without bail.
Please pray for the family of Lauren Phelps during this tragic time, and that God will bring healing to all those involved. In recent news another teen was charged with murder for helping a teen kill herself.
