The sad news just emerged that Arthur Mitchell, a pioneer in the dance and choreography industry, passed away. Mitchell reportedly passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 84.

Mitchell broke several barriers in the entertainment industry. He rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s and became the first African American dancer to join the New York City Ballet.

Eventually, Mitchell became a principal dancer and soloist. Later, he co-founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Dance critic Alan Kriegsman wrote, “Mr. Mitchell not only launched and empowered the careers of many excellent dancers but also changed forever the image of the African American dance professional.”

Mitchell’s career was extremely successful and he won several awards throughout his life. The Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts honored him, he was given the National Medal of Arts, and he won a “genius grant” by the MacArthur Foundation.

Following his death, hundreds of people took to social media to share their condolences.

Dance Theatre of Harlem wrote, “It’s with the deepest sadness we share the news that our founding artistic director,  the great, Arthur Mitchell has passed away. His legacy of passion, power, and perfection will live on through each and every person he’s touched in his lifetime. We love you and we honor you!”
