On Sunday, August 12th, news emerged that the legendary Aretha Franklin, 76, was “gravely ill” and in hospice care — a type of comfort care commonly used during someone’s final days on earth. As previously reported, the singer’s family requested “prayers and privacy” as she had been battling serious health issues in recent days.
An update was released on Franklin on Tuesday, August 14th. Franklin’s beloved nephew provided an exclusive update to PEOPLE regarding his aunt’s deteriorating health.
“She’s alert, laughing, teasing, able to recognize people,” he revealed. “Family is there with her. She’s home.”
“I saw her a week ago Friday and we talked for about 45 minutes to an hour. My brother was there on Saturday and she was alert, talking, laughing, joking,” her nephew continued. “She’s watching TV.”
“God forbid she sees all of this ‘Aretha’s dead,’ so I don’t want to dampen her spirits on that,” he added referring to the rumors about the “Respect” singer’s death. “We believe she’ll pull through it, she believes she’ll pull through it, and that’s the important thing.”
These reports come shortly after the Queen of Soul officially retired from music earlier this year. For health concerns, the doctor ordered her to cancel all upcoming concerts.
Amidst the troubling news, many fans — including Bill Clinton and Sheryl Crow — have expressed their support for Franklin.
In breaking news, an immense tragedy involving a bridge collapse occurred leaving dozens of people dead. Please pray for the victims!
