On June 26th, 2019, First Daughter Ivanka Trump, 37, left for Osaka, Japan to join the G-20 Summit alongside her father President Donald Trump. Ivanka’s primary purpose for the event was in regard to encouraging world leaders to prioritize women’s empowerment.
The eldest First Daughter was heavily criticized for attending the international meetings. The hashtag #UnwantedIvanka was trending on Twitter after a video surfaced of her chatting with some of the other attendees.
Among those who blasted Ivanka included U.S. Representative Alexandria Oscasio-Cortez, commonly referred to as AOC. The Democratic rep of New York’s 14th District took a shot at the White House Advisor in a censorious tweet. She implied that Ivanka was not qualified to attend G-20.
“It may be shocking to some, but being someone’s daughter actually isn’t a career qualification,” AOC fired. “It hurts our diplomatic standing when the President phones it in & the world moves on.”
“The US needs our President working the G20. Bringing a qualified diplomat couldn’t hurt either,” she added.
Despite the criticism, Ivanka shared a special “thank you” message with a highlight video showcasing her proudest moments at the G-20 summit. She emphasized the importance of women’s economic empowerment in an inspirational speech.
