AOC Casts House Democrats’ Sole Vote Against Omnibus Spending Bill

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez cited “the dramatic improve in DHS and ICE spending” as the rationale behind her vote.

Citing the elevated immigration enforcement and navy funding it comprises, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday forged the only Democratic Home vote in opposition to a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bundle.

Within the last vote of the 117th Congress, Home lawmakers passed the sweeping spending invoice 225-201-1, with Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan) voting “current” and 9 Republican lawmakers crossing occasion strains to support the measure. The invoice now goes to President Joe Biden’s desk for signing.

Ocasio-Cortez defined in a statement that she voted in opposition to the invoice as a result of she campaigned on a promise “to oppose extra enlargement and funding” for the Division of Homeland Safety (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), “significantly within the absence of long-overdue immigration reform.”

“The dramatic improve in DHS and ICE spending… cuts in opposition to the guarantees our occasion has made to immigrant communities throughout the nation,” she added.

Quite a few progressive and immigrant teams applauded Ocasio-Cortez’s “no” vote.

The Communities United for Standing and Safety (CUSP) coalition mentioned in a statement that Democratic management of each homes of Congress and the White Home “ought to have meant that Democrats lead with dignity [and] respect and uphold the inherent worth of all immigrants. Sadly so far, that has seldom been the case.”

CUSP continued:

The 117th Congress is being requested to assist a funding invoice that provides billions of {dollars} of funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol to rent extra brokers and surveil our communities, preserve the established order of the anti-Black immigration detention system, goal folks with visa overstays, failure to move the Afghan Adjustment Act, and a deliberate omission of lifesaving immigration provisions.
CUSP firmly helps and thanks Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for boldly standing with immigrant communities with a no vote against the omnibus. Despite any good that may be in this bill, we reject the selfish choice that the Democrats have presented us because we know that even in the difficult world of politics—compromise is possible.

Civil Rights Corps founder and executive director Alec Karakatsanis tweeted that “what Democrats did as we speak is shameful.”

“They negotiated a large federal spending invoice in secret and didn’t give anybody time to learn the 4,000 pages,” he continued. “A small group of them inserted, behind closed doorways and with out public debate, large will increase in cops, prisons, and surveillance.”

“At a time of rising authoritarianism, ecological collapse, criminalization of abortion, and so on., Democratic management continues to strengthen the very establishments that may result in overt fascism,” Karakatsanis added. “Just one Democrat (AOC) in both the Home or the Senate voted in opposition to it.”
