Anthony Weiner's Fate Just Revealed in Court

September 25, 2017Sep 25, 2017

In May, former Congressman Anthony Weiner pled guilty for sending obscene sexual texts to a 15-year-old girl. Shortly after, Weiner's wife, Huma Abedin, filed for divorce. Abedin served as a top aide to Hillary Clinton.

The 53-year-old disgraced politician reportedly began his two-month online relationship with the young girl after she messaged him on Twitter in July 2016. After news of the inappropriate messages was released, Weiner pleaded for probation, claiming that it was due to his extreme sickness.

The former Congressman had said that he was on a continuous road to recovery and that his sickness had already cost him his marriage and career. He said that his actions had already "brought great devastation to family and friends" and destroyed his "life's dream of public service."

Weiner's defense attorneys wrote, "A term of imprisonment would bring Anthony’s indisputably successful treatment for the sickness underlying his crime to an immediate and complete halt and separate Anthony from the son who has motivated his recovery."

Despite his plea, Judge Denise Cote decided on Monday morning that "probation" isn't enough. Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in prison. As soon as he found out the news, he reportedly dropped his head and began to cry.

Cote said, "This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment. [The teen] was a minor. She was a victim. She's entitled to the law's full protection."

After the final sentence, Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim said, "Anthony Weiner, a former Congressman and candidate for Mayor, asked a girl who he knew to be 15 years old to display her naked body and engage in sexually explicit behavior for him online. Justice demands that this type of conduct be prosecuted and punished with time in prison. Today, Anthony Weiner received a just sentence that was appropriate for his crime."

Anthony Weiner will serve a 21-month sentence and may also spend the rest of his life as a registered sex offender. He was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.
