Another US State Declares State of Emergency in Preparation for Hurricane Irma

On Wednesday morning, Hurricane Irma made landfall in the Caribbean. The Category 5 storm is the most powerful Atlantic hurricane in recorded history, and preparations are being made for the impending destruction that it will bring.

While the storm could still take a turn, it is projected to hit the U.S. mainland over the weekend. There has already been a mandatory evacuation issued for part of Florida, and now other states are making extreme preparations as well.

The latest forecast shifted Irma's center more to the east, which would put Georgia and the Carolinas at a higher risk. On Wednesday afternoon, South Carolina governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency.

"South Carolina is fortunate to have time to allow us to prepare for Hurricane Irma's potential landfall, and it is important that families and individuals in vulnerable areas use that time to review safety plans in case they are needed," McMaster said in a statement.

Declaring a state of emergency allows government funds to be made available and for quick emergency relief action to occur if needed. The City of Charleston released an official statement about necessary preparations as well.

Please continue praying for everyone in the path of Hurricane Irma and share this with family or friends in the hazardous areas. We will update you as we receive information.
