Reports are coming in that a male student fired a shot and wounded another student at a central Illinois high school on Wednesday morning.
Police claim that the shooting happened at Mattoon High School at about 11:30 am. The suspect is now in custody and the injured student is in stable condition at a local hospital. The names and ages of the suspect and the student have not yet been released. Police have also said that they cannot yet comment on the situation.
The Mattoon Community Unit School District 2 said on its Facebook page that it is working alongside emergency workers to determine what exactly happened.
After the incident occurred, the police began clearing out students from the school, room by room, until the entire building was empty. Soon thereafter, the students were bused to a nearby school where they could safely be picked up by parents. School officials claimed that they are on a soft lockdown until officials figure out what happened.
The school is located about 180 miles south of Chicago.
In breaking news, a manhunt is underway after the kidnapping of a little girl.
