On Wednesday, Trump commuted the sentence of Alice Johnson, who had been imprisoned for 21 years for a nonviolent offense involving the distribution of cocaine.
By law, as deemed her punishment at the time of her sentencing, Johnson was doomed to spend the rest of her life in prison. But reality TV star Kim Kardashian sought help from Ivanka Trump, which led to a conversation with President Trump, concerning the release of Johnson.
Trump, in his kindness, chose to commute her sentence. And when Johnson was released, her reunion with family was caught on camera. It is heartwarming.
When Johnson, 63, was released from prison in Aliceville, Alabama, she rushed into the arms of her family. Her family and her broke out into tears, as news channels like ABC News documented the meeting.
“I feel like my life is starting over again,” she said. “It’s a miracle day.”
She added, “I’m free to hug my family. I’m free to live life. I’m free to start over. This is the greatest day of my life. My heart is just bursting with gratitude.”
The White House issued a statement in response to President Trump’s decision to release Johnson. The statement noted her exemplary record while imprisoned.
"Ms. Johnson has accepted responsibility for her past behavior and has been a model prisoner over the past two decades. Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates," the White House said in a statement announcing the commutation of her sentence.
"While this Administration will always be very tough on crime, it believes that those who have paid their debt to society and worked hard to better themselves while in prison deserve a second chance," the White House said in a statement.
