Justice has been served. A famous international pro-athlete, 23-year-old Alex Hepburn, was found guilty on rape charges.
In 2017, Hepburn reportedly sexually assaulted his victim while she was sleeping in a bedroom. The young woman, who was seeing one of his cricket teammates — Joe Clarke — at the time, thought it was Clarke who entered the room. She later realized it was not Clarke, who allegedly left the girl alone to go the bathroom because he was sick, reported BBC.
In the initial trial, Hepburn argued, "She was engaging in the act so I presumed she was enjoying it."
Prior to the rape scandal, Hepburn played cricket for Worcestershire County Cricket Club in England. Hepburn was a star all-rounder, meaning he was highly skilled in both batting and bowling. Typically, cricket players are only skilled at one or the other.
Hepburn was pronounced guilty because “a sleeping girl cannot consent.” Additionally, the woman was in Clarke’s bedroom, not Hepburn’s, so she had no reason to believe the man who entered the room would be Hepburn.
The professional athlete was spotted crying after the judge handed down the jury's guilty verdict.
A spokesperson for the local police force stated, "At the time of the offence Hepburn was in a position of trust and power as a professional sportsman...and I hope this conviction will provide reassurance to other victims of sexual offences."
His sentencing is scheduled for the end of April. Stay tuned for additional details regarding his case, and please keep his victim in your prayers as she moves forward with her life.
