On Wednesday, April 17th, news broke that a former presidential world leader committed suicide. Alan Garcia, who served as the President of Peru from 1985 to 1990 and then from 2006 to 2011, reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
“Peruvian authorities say the country's former president Alan Garcia has died after shooting himself as police arrived at his house to arrest him in connection with a bribery investigation,” a report from Sky News stated.
According to CNN, Garcia was set to be taken into custody on Wednesday over corruption charges. Details regarding the nature of the charges were not immediately released.
Police reportedly entered his home when Garcia instructed them to call his lawyer. Moments later, the 69-year-old shot himself in his bedroom and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
