Alabama Judge Defies Supreme Court

Roy Moore, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama, has now defied the Supreme Court of the United States.  Justice Moore has taken strong stands in the past for conservative values, including defending the display of the Ten Commandments.

The state of Alabama had previously had in effect a ban on same sex marriages.  After the US Supreme Court ruled this summer in favor of gay marriages, the Alabama Supreme Court has been working on reconciling the state's position with the US Supreme Court decision.

Judge Moore's decision was to ban all same sex marriages in the state of Alabama issued by judges until the Alabama Supreme Court reaches its decision.  Predictably, the ACLU criticized his decision.

What remains to be seen is if there will be significant opposition to the US Supreme Court's decision on gay marriage.  In the meantime, Judge Moore has taken a courageous stand in favor of Alabama's existing law in defiance of the US Supreme Court ruling.
