Kate Spade was one of the most prominent household-name designers in the last several decades. Her iconic handbags took over the fashion industry in the 1990s and her empire grew in both numbers and stature over the following three decades.

Sadly, the designer was found dead on Tuesday morning in her apartment in New York City. While the cause of death has not been officially confirmed, preliminary reports point to suicide.

After the news of her death emerged, fans from all around the world began posting about the tragedy, sharing in the grief. Now, Kate Spade’s sister has broken her silence as well.

According to Reta Saffo, Kate Spade’s sister, the death was not too surprising. Sadly, she said that Spade had been suffering from various forms of mental illness for years.

She said, “Sometimes you simply cannot save people from themselves!”

Additionally, Reta said that Kate Spade had been “fixated” on Robin William’s death in 2014, which was also a suicide. Now, she knows why.

Reta said, “I will say this was not unexpected by me. I’d flown out to Napa and NYC several times in the past 3-4 years to help her to get the treatment she needed (inpatient hospitalization).”

She continued, “She was always a very excitable little girl and I felt all the stress/pressure of her brand (KS) may have flipped the switch where she eventually became full-on manic depressive.”

According to Reta, her family was close to getting Kate Spade to go to treatment, but she would usually back out in the end. Sadly, the reason she wouldn't seek treatment was because of the appearance of her brand.

She said, “We’d get soooo close to packing her bags, but- in the end, the ‘image’ of her brand (happy-go-lucky Kate Spade) was more important for her to keep up. She was definitely worried about what people would say if they found out.”

David Spade, Kate’s brother-in-law, spoke out after Kate’s death as well. Below is his tribute.

Please be praying for Spade’s family during this trying time. Let us know if you are praying. We will continue to update as more information is revealed.
