The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences condemned Will Smith’s comments at the Oscars about Chris Rock.
“The Academy does not condone violence of any form,” the Academy tweeted. “Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world.”
Smith slapped Rock following a GI Jane joke about Rock’s wife.
Rock was the only one who was able to hear him apologize later.
“I want to apologize to the academy. I apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying for winning an award,” he said. “It’s not about winning an award for me; it’s about being able to shine a light on all of the people.”
Chris Rock has not heard from Smith. Rumors have it that there was tension between the two of them for some time.
