Candace Payne, aka "Chewbacca Mom," gained overnight success when she posted a video last week that blew away all of Facebook's records with 50 million views in one day. Now she's using her new fame to get an important message out.
No one knows exactly why her video of herself trying on a roaring Chewbacca mask and laughing hysterically went so viral. Perhaps it's the pure, unfettered joy she is expressing in the midst of a gloomy, anxiety-ridden society. After accepting an invitation to visit Facebook headquarters, according to Christian Headlines, Payne sat down with Buzzfeed's Alex Kantrowitz to talk about it.
If you haven't seen the original viral video (reposted on YouTube), watch it below:
When asked about the source of the joy she's expressing in the video — which now has 148 million views on Facebook — Payne said, "When you really know who you are, you don't have to impress anybody ... you can laugh at yourself, and it's OK.”
But Kantrowitz wasn't satisfied by that answer and dug deeper, asking, "It's tough for a lot of people to get there. So what do you think helped you get there?"
Payne replied, "I have unashamedly said from Day 1 that I am a follower of Jesus Christ. And I think sometimes, we have painted a broad paintbrush on Christians to think that we're very narrow-minded, that we're bigoted, and that we're haters. And that's really not who we are. But the truth is that my relationship with Jesus Christ has completely made me who I am because He's told me who I am. And once you know that you're loved by God — and not just a god, but the God that created everything — your whole life changes."
Bravo, Chewbacca Mom! And God bless.
