The Biden administration is asking for $13.7 billion more to help Ukraine between October-December. YouGov/Stand Together pollThe majority of Americans would conditionally fund further assistance to Ukraine, according to the survey.
Only 2% of Americans think President Joe Biden should prioritize Russia’s defeat in Ukraine, while a plurality (40%) said the president should prioritize lowering or eliminating inflation.
42% of the 1,000 participants polled believed the United States should less militarily engage in international conflict. 37% thought the level of engagement should stay the same. Only 7% believed the U.S. should engage in more military conflict abroad.
Among three views offered, a minority of participants (20%) agreed that “the United States should support Ukraine for as long as it takes, even if American households will have to pay higher gas prices and food prices, as well as higher taxes, as consequences.”
54 percent of respondents agreed with the following viewpoint:
The United States should not continue to support Ukraine unless European allies are willing and able to offer a similar level of support. The cost of supporting Ukraine should not be paid primarily by American households. Even if this means that Ukraine might lose some territory due to the inaction European countries.
Twenty-seven per cent said that the United States should cease supporting Ukraine after the Biden administration sent more than $50 billionIn aid, other European countries began to withdraw their support.
The poll showed that Trump supporters were more concerned about additional aid to Ukraine than Biden supporters and independents.
“Support for an independent Ukraine is clearly in America’s interest,” James CarafanoThe Daily Signal received a statement from Deputy President of The Heritage Foundation’s Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy, shortly after the departure of Ukraine. “It is a head-butt to Russian and Chinese designs to destabilize Europe and marginalize U.S. Ukrainians would be first to tell you there would be no Ukraine today without U.S. military aid, which was started by President [Donald] Trump.” (The Daily Signal is Heritage’s multimedia news organization.)
Carafano said that Americans are still concerned about how the money will go.
“Americans helped Ukrainians and they did something in their own interest,” he added. “Many are rightly concerned about how money is spent, especially on the civilian side. They are right we should never waste a tax dollar.”
“The United States has provided more aid to Ukraine than nearly every other country combined, despite the limited American national interests at stake in the conflict,” Dan Caldwell, senior adviser at Concerned Veterans for America, said in a statement. “With so many pressing challenges at home and in other parts of the world, the American people clearly don’t want Uncle Sam to continue to play Uncle Sucker in Europe.”
YouGov’s poll found that 51% of Americans think the U.S. should send to Ukraine the same amount in military and economic aid as wealthy European nations. 34% believe the U.S. should send fewer. 60% of respondents believe the U.S. should encourage others countries to help Ukraine, instead of relying on American resources for support.
YouGov conducted the first and second polls on Sept. 1-6 and Sept. 9-12. Both polls surveyed a general U.S. sample of 1,000 participants with a 3.4% & 3.5% margin of error respectively.
