Eight Americans have now been reported dead after a horrific bus crash Tuesday morning that took the lives of four more people and injured at least 14.

According to Fox 26, the bus was headed to the Chacchoben Ruins, a popular tourist site with Mayan pyramids dating back hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. But the trip to the ruins, about 170 miles southwest of Cancun, took a tragic turn when the bus flipped for unknown reasons on the highway.

Along with the eight Americans killed, a Canadian, a Mexican, and two Swedes also died, according to ABC 10 News. The 27 total passengers were from two different Royal Caribbean cruise ships, the Serenade of the South Seas and the Celebrity Equinox, both based out of Miami. They had disembarked at nearby Mahahual.

Images of the crash showed some of the survivors lying on the highway. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. One child was killed, according to CNN.

Passenger Chris Brawley didn't understand why the bus he was on crashed but added that "the bus clearly lost control somehow as there were swerve marks all over the road surface," according to NBC News.

According to CBS News, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico responded to the crash, saying, "We express our condolences to all those affected by this tragedy. We will continue to monitor the situation. The protection of U.S. citizens overseas is one of the highest priorities for the State Department. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance to affected U.S. citizens."

Royal Caribbean also responded, calling the news "heartbreaking" and adding that, "Our hearts go out to all those involved. We are doing all we can to care for our guests, including assisting with medical care and transportation."

The cruise line acknowledged that 27 of their guests were on the bus. Royal Caribbean was recently in the news after 332 of their passengers came down sick with a stomach virus before the Independence of the Seas docked at Port Everglades, Florida, Fox News reported.

This story is still developing. Please pray for the those injured in the bus crash and the families of those who were killed. In other news, a famous athlete has decided to donate his beautiful mansion to needy children.
