Several wild fights broke out at a South Carolina prison on Sunday night that resulted in several casualties and several more injuries. According to most recent reports, 7 people were killed and 17 others were injured.

The fights occurred at the Lee Correctional Institution in South Carolina. According to authorities, seven inmates were killed as a result of the many fights that took place beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday night.

Additionally, there were 17 people who were hospitalized with moderate to severe injuries. The extremity of the fight was particularly strange due to the fact that it was a max security prison.

The news emerged at around 3 a.m. on Monday morning from prison spokesman Jeff Taillon after the State Law Enforcement Division had the situation under control.

After the fight broke out, the Lee County Fire Department immediately was sent to assist with the “mass casualty incident.” Thankfully, Taillon said that no officers were injured from the inmate fights.

The Department posted a status about the incident on Twitter.

They said, “Lee County Fire/Rescue assisted with a Mass Casualty Incident at Lee Correctional. Mutual Aid was received from Florence County EMS, Kershaw County EMS, Darlington County EMS, Lexington County EMS and Hartsville Rescue. Assistance was also received from Med One a private service.”

According to the Washington Post, the prison facility in Bishopville holds around 1,500 inmates and it is known for housing some of the state’s most violent offenders. In 2015, two officers were stabbed at that prison.

At this point, no other information has been revealed about the incident or about the state of those injured. We will update as more information is given.
