The Bay Area experienced an untimely wake-up call on Thursday morning as a 4.5 magnitude earthquake jolted the area. Sources are claiming that the magnitude was between 4.4 to 4.7, though most claim 4.5. The earthquake took place at around 2:39 a.m. PT.
According to reports, the center of the earthquake was in Berkeley right around the Claremont Hotel. Early reports determined that it had a depth of 8 miles, though it was felt all across the Bay Area with people reporting it in San Jose, a full 40 miles away.
The earthquake was classified as moderate, and authorities said that the aftershocks will be felt throughout the day on Thursday. Additionally, USGS’s Keith Knudsen said that there is a 5-10% chance that another strong earthquake could hit within the next 2-3 days.
Knudsen said, “We live in earthquake country so we should do all the things they tell us to do.” He also confirmed that within the last decade, there have been at least three earthquakes with that magnitude to hit the area.
A local resident, Tom Newton, said, “It was a nice jolt. What surprised us was the duration; it seemed to go on for a little too long. You know, that feeling when it stops being kind of fun and now you’re worried? We looked around the house and were quite surprised that nothing was knocked off the walls or off shelves and onto floor.”
Another resident told Kron 4, “So I live in Berkeley Hills right at the Arlington Circle. I can tell you that it was a long, violent shaking. Like somebody trying hard to wake you up…No damage that I can see, but a good 5-10 seconds of violent shaking.”
According to CNN, the area’s commuter trains were delayed on Thursday morning in order to assess the potential damage. A rep from the SF Bart line made the announcement on Twitter.
They said, “Expect major delays with our first trains this morning. Trains will be performing track inspections due to earlier seismic activity.”
Thankfully, no extreme damage has occurred from this surprising, early morning earthquake. Have you ever been woken up by an earthquake? Let us know! In other recent news, a prominent Christian couple is pleading for prayers for their 2 young kids fighting for their lives in a hospital.
