Horrible news has been reported out of Japan on Saturday. According to reports as of 3:00 p.m. EST, at least 49 people have been killed and 48 people are still unaccounted for after intense rainfalls. The number of deaths has increased significantly in the last two hours alone.
The torrential downpour took place in western and central Japan. According to reports, over 1.6 million people were evacuated from their homes due to the rains.
The rains are being called “historic” due to the landslides, rising rivers, and strong winds. At this point, Yahoo! reported that Japan’s Meteorological Agency has sent out special weather warnings for three different prefectures in Honshu, but the number was originally at five.
While 1.6 million people were forced to evacuate their homes, over 3.1 million people were advised to do the same. Sadly, at least 49 people have been killed already from the intense storms.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga reported that at least 48,000 first responders were sent to the scene, including police, firefighters, and Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.
At this point, it appears that the weather has settled a bit between western and eastern Japan. However, concerns still remain as warm air is headed toward the area.
