An Italian commuter train derailed on Thursday morning near Milan, according to Fox News. Three people were killed in the incident and another 13 were seriously injured, as many passengers became trapped in mangled cars.
At first, people in their cars felt a shake. Then, they heard a huge bang, and before they could figure out what was happening, the car's roof and walls began caving in on them.
According to the Chicago Tribune, "Passengers reported feeling the car shake for a few minutes before hearing a big bang, and then feeling the car crush in on them."
Once the train derailed, passengers were ordered to get off. Half an hour later, the train rescue arrived to help those who were trapped.
Fox News reports that the Trenord train derailed near Pioltello Limito station less than 13 miles outside of Milan. At least two cars from the middle of the train moved off the rails and were left standing at an angle. As a result, several people died and much more were injured. Aside from those dead and seriously injured, dozens more were injured less severely.
This tragic incident held up traffic in Milan for several hours as rescuers removed trapped passengers who were inside the mangled cars.
This incident, although tragic, apparently isn't the first of its kind. This was only the latest of numerous incidents involving Italy's rail system. Two years ago, for instance, 23 people were killed after two trains collided on a single track in southeast Italy.
On top of that, in 2009, 32 people were killed when a freight train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed and exploded in center Italy.
ABC News reports that the train was traveling at normal speed when the accident occurred.
Trenord, the regional train company serving the Lombardy region, is notorious for having packed cars, frequent delays, and a dirty environment. On social media on Thursday, it was ridiculed for tweets blaming delays into Milan on a "technical inconvenience."
So far, the identity of the victims hasn't been confirmed, although Italian media report that they are all women.
