Living in a country with religious freedom, it is sometimes easy to forget that we have brothers and sisters around the world who are experiencing intense persecution for their Christian faith. In fact, according to Open Doors, Christians are facing more persecution today than at any other point in history.
This week, some heartbreaking news emerged out of Nigeria. A group of Muslim Fulani militant herdsmen participated in a four-day killing spree in the northern part of the country, killing at least 200 Christians.
The attacks took place from June 21-24 in northern Nigerian villages, surrounding the city of Jos. Reportedly, the region had to implement a mandatory curfew to try to prevent the killings, but the violence has continued.
According to Open Doors, these militant herdsmen killed at least 600 Christians in 2018 alone. The main target has been in the Middle Belt region of the country.
They also noted that the attacks are not isolated to Nigeria. Several countries in Africa, the world’s second-largest continent, have been experiencing similar types of attacks.
The organization said that their partners in Nigeria were particularly worried about women and children, as the attackers have been targeting them the worst. They have also been burning down dozens of churches and homes.
Beyond the Muslim Fulani group, the Boko Haram fighters have also continued to attack both Christians and Muslims in the region. According to BBC, that group killed at least 900 people in 2017.
This news is absolutely tragic and we are praying for our brothers and sisters around the world who are experiencing extreme persecution for their faith. Will you join us in prayer? Pray for strength and for peace. Let us know if you are praying!
In other recent news, the cause of death was just revealed for famous "The Office" actor. Please continue to keep his family in your prayers as well.
