On Saturday, June 30, a group of tourists, including several Americans, were on a tour boat in the Bahamas. Sadly, the boat exploded causing at least one death and several injuries.
The explosion took place at around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. As of Monday morning, the cause of the explosion is still unknown, though authorities are working to investigate the accident. Sadly, the explosion resulted in the loss of one life and many other injuries. According to police reports, there were 12 people on the boat at the time of the accident.
An American family was on board the boat when the explosion took place. According to reports, 22-year-old Stefanie Schaffer from Rutland, Vermont experienced the worst injuries. She lost both of her legs in the explosion and is currently in a medically-induced coma for other serious internal injuries.
Stefanie's sister, Brooke, as well as her mother, Stacey, and stepdad, Paul Bender, were all on the boat as well. Stacey is currently hospitalized for her injuries as well. While the other four people on the boat who were injured were flown to Florida for hospitalization, Stefanie and Stacey's conditions were too serious and therefore they had to remain in the Bahamas.
The family's GoFundMe page said that Stefanie "sustained life-threatening injuries including a double amputation and remains in critical condition." Stacey "suffered multiple broken bones and internal injuries."
Chester Cooper, the Exumas and Ragged Island MP said, "This is a sad day for Exuma and a sad day for our American friends. We are saddened and our hearts are hurting, but we will get through this together. Your prayers, as always, are needed and appreciated."
