10 Foods to Avoid This Summer, Linked to Severe Illnesses in Several States

July 24, 2018Jul 24, 2018

In recent days, the number of food recalls linked to severe illnesses has been overwhelming. With several recalls involving popular foods circulating the nation, CNN composed a list of foods to avoid in the upcoming weeks. The majority of the recalled foods are linked to Salmonella — a potentially deadly bacteria that causes diarrhea, fever, chills, abdominal pain, and other uncomfortable symptoms.

If you or someone you know has any of these food products inside of your home, please trash or return to the place of purchase immediately. Read more about each recall (listed in alphabetical order) below:

1. Crab Meat

According to CNN, imported crab meat from Venezuela should be avoided. At least a dozen illnesses linked to a Vibrio parahaemolyticus outbreak were reported on the East coast. Please be cautious when consuming fresh crab meat.

2. Goldfish

This recall was just announced on Monday, July 23rd. As previously reported, Pepperidge Farm voluntarily recalled four different flavors of Goldfish crackers over a fear of Salmonella. An ingredient from one of their suppliers reportedly discovered traces of the harmful bacteria. Read more information about this recall here.

3. Kellogg's Honey Smacks Cereal

In mid-June, Kellogg Company recalled certain packages of their Honey Smacks cereal. Several Salmonella illnesses were reported after consuming the popular breakfast product. 31 states, as well as several other countries including Costa Rica and Mexico, were affected by this recall. Read additional details here.

4. McDonald's Salads

More than 160 customers in at least 14 states have been sickened, some of which were hospitalized, from eating McDonald’s salad products. The lettuce was contaminated with cyclosporiasis — a parasite that causes diarrhea, weight loss, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and other symptoms upon consumption. Read the latest updates on this recall here.

5. Melon

Sliced melon products sold at popular retail locations including Costco, Walmart, Trader Joe’s Walgreens, and Whole Foods were recalled over a Salmonella outbreak. More than 70 people fell ill after consuming the fruit. The recalled fruits include all types of melons such as watermelon, honeydew melon, and cantaloupe. Several states were affected by the recall: Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee. Read more information about this recall here.

6. Pasta Salad

Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Wisconsin all confirmed Salmonella illnesses related to pasta salad. The recalled products were sold at grocery chain Hy-Vee, according to CNN.

7. Ritz Cracker Sandwiches

Another food believed to be linked to Salmonella was certain Ritz Cracker sandwiches and Ritz Bits. As reported earlier, one of the company’s suppliers found potential traces of the bacteria during testing; no illnesses were confirmed. Please read more information here.

8. Swiss Rolls

This delicious-looking sweet treat was also voluntarily recalled as a precaution. Faith Family America previously reported that the Swiss Rolls were pulled from shelves nationwide after the company was concerned about a possible Salmonella outbreak. More details here.

9. Turkey

Almost 100 Salmonella cases linked to raw turkey consumption have been reported since November of last year. Illnesses were reported in 26 different states, but a supplier or brand has still not been identified, reported CNN. Please take extra precaution when consuming raw turkey products.

10. Vegetable Trays

The FDA announced a recall of several types of vegetable trays in late June. As previously reported, at least 78 people from Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin were sickened with cyclospora. Read more details about this recall here.
