Julia StilesHeath Ledger and Kat Stratford, respectively, were star-crossed lovers. They fell in love despite high school drama. Meanwhile, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Cameron James), Gabrielle Union (Chastity), Allison Janney (Ms. Perky), David Krumholtz (Michael Eckman), Larisa Oleynik (Bianca Stratford), Andrew Keegan(Joey Donner). Susan May Pratt(Mandella), made up the star-studded support cast.
“I have so many great memories from that movie that are fading because it has been 20 years,” the Save the Last Dance Actress told Use in February 2019. “But it was just such a special time where we were all so excited. It was exciting, we were all young and none of us were jaded so it was very welcoming. It was just a really, really fun summer.”
Stiles continued: “It was my first big job and I really loved that part because I hadn’t seen the character of a teenage girl so feisty before and that just felt really refreshing and I was really, really happy to be a part of it.”
In the years since the film’s success, many of its actors have gone on to conquer Hollywood. Ledger, however, died in January 2008 from an accidental drug overdose at the age of 28. Before his death, the actor stole the show in 2008’s The Dark Knight, 2005’s Brokeback Mountain and 2001’s A Knight’s Tale. He was also awarded a posthumous Oscar in recognition of his portrayal as the Joker.
“God, the first time I met him, he had done a movie in Australia and nobody had really heard of him — he was just this mysterious 19-year-old,” Union said of her late costar during a November 2016 appearance on Andy Cohen Live on Camera: Watch What Happens. “He told me and everyone else who was over 21 to meet him at the top of the hotel at this bar, and we walk in, and he’s just got this wild hair. Again, he’s 19, but he’s got a dad drink.”
The Mary Jane star added: “He was such a man, such a gentleman, and his girlfriend at the time was, like, 38. He was warm, funny, and great. We had a lot fun. I thought all movies were like this. … The whole cast was like a dream. But he was a doll.”
Stiles shared a similar sentiment. Us Weekly in October 2014. “He was so nice. He was such a force,” she recalled. “He was, even at that age, a very, very powerful, lovely human being.”
