As the nation — and even the world — donates money to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey, one anti-Trump, pro-Resistance, pro-Palestinian activist and Women’s March organizer is under fire for reportedly scamming people trying to donate to victims.
Vocal leftist Linda Sarsour jumped onboard the donation train Tuesday with a tweet directing her followers to donate to the “#Harvey Hurricane Relief Fund.”
But according to the Washington Examiner, while the wording of her tweet is leading people to believe that donated money will go directly to humanitarian aid, the link actually brings them to a page run by the left-wing Texas Organizing Project political action committee. And that’s the group the money is going to.
In the smaller print, the relief fund page run political action committee talks about the need to rebuild devastated areas, but then says their main purpose is to shine “a spotlight on inequalities that emerge in the restoration of lives, livelihoods, and homes, amplifying the needs of hard-hit communities, and providing legal assistance for residents wrongfully denied government support.”
The logos below the description represent the left-wing groups supporting the hurricane relief fund but don’t have their names written out. The backlash came quickly on Twitter:
Sarsour defended her relief fund, saying it focused on “long term support/advocacy,” which was “needed, too.” Meanwhile, numerous warnings are going out about Hurricane Harvey donation scams.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is alerting charitable folks to bad people luring them to donation websites that are actually full of viruses and malware. They’re warning people about being very careful about clicking on links from people or organizations they’re not familiar with and are advising everyone to keep their antivirus software up to date.
As for a safe place to donate, Franklin Graham’s non-denominational Samaritan’s Purse is getting very high marks for its ability to get funds directly to those who need them and help fund practical relief efforts.
Meanwhile, a hugely famous Hollywood actress has just donated $1 million to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.
