Louise Linton, United States Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin’s wife, was under fire after her latest Instagram post. Following the backlash from her followers, she later deleted the post, but the screenshots still went viral.
Linton posted a photo of her and her husband exiting a government plane in Kentucky. Mnuchin was reportedly in the state to discuss tax reform with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, according to CNN.
In the picture, Linton was wearing an all white outfit, heels, and shades, while carrying a handbag and colored scarf. In the caption of the post, Linton hashtagged multiple luxury designers, revealing that she was fully dressed in designer clothing. See the screenshots below.
One Instagram user named Jenni Miller responded, “Glad we could pay for your little getaway.” Others chimed in with agreement, insinuating that taxpayers are contributing to her luxurious lifestyle.
Linton replied to Miller in a sarcastic comment Miller later described to CNN as “offensive.” She began, “Did you think this was a personal trip?! Adorable! Do you think the US govt paid for our honeymoon or personal travel?! Lololol.”
She continued, “Have you given more to the economy than me and my husband? Either as an individual earner in taxes OR in self sacrifice to your country?...Pretty sure the amount we sacrifice per year is a lot more than you’d be willing to sacrifice if the choice was yours...Thanks for the passive aggressive nasty comment.”
However, other users appreciated her “class.” One user stated, “I’m a 40 year old Black man who is so glad to have class back in the Executive Branch of our government.”
