Late Sunday night on October 1st, a great tragedy occurred on the Las Vegas strip in Nevada—a 64-year-old gunman opened fire from his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. After firing several shots below, he reportedly killed himself before police arrived at his location.
The attack, which killed more than 58 people and injured over 515 victims, was aimed at attendees of a country music festival. This has been declared as the deadliest mass shooting in history, which ISIS later claimed responsibility for on Monday. However, this claim has not been confirmed by U.S. authorities.
A number of families and loved ones have been affected by this horrible tragedy. One wife, who was present at the concert, told the tragic story of losing her husband in the Las Vegas mass shooting.
Heather Gulish Melton was expecting a fun and romantic evening with the love of her life, Sonny Melton. Both work in the medical field in Big Sandy, Tennessee—Sonny is a 29-year-old registered nurse and his wife is a surgeon.
Heather told a local news station, “At this point, I’m in complete disbelief and despair. I don’t know what to say. Sonny was the most kind-hearted, loving man I have ever met. He saved my life and lost his.”
She continued, “He grabbed me and started running when I felt him get shot in the back. I want everyone to know what a kind-hearted, loving man he was, but at this point, I can barely breathe.”
Prior to her husband’s death, he checked into the Route 91 Harvest Festival on Facebook, which originally sparked concern among his family members and other followers. Eventually, the post was filled with thoughts and prayers for his family and many referring to Sonny as a “hero” for saving his wife’s life.
From social media, it appears the couple has been married since 2016 and there are children in the family. According to USA Today, they previously described their relationship on a wedding website as "the couple that never should have met, fallen in love or had a future together."
The website also stated, "But life is funny and we believe God brought us together as soulmates. We have shared amazing times together and nearly unbearable heartaches but through it all, we have grown stronger in our love for each other and our families."
Please keep this family in your prayers, as well as all those affected by the Las Vegas shooting. In related news, shocking details were revealed about the family of the Vegas attacker.
