It probably sounds like an odd statement coming from a pastor, especially when Christianity tends to emphasize the spiritual over the physical, but megachurch pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church wrote this week that if you want to change your life you should change your body.
In a devotional, Warren wrote that "For change to happen in any area of your life, whether it’s financial, vocational, educational, mental, or relational, you have to begin with the physical. Why? Because your body affects your behavior. Your muscles affect your moods and your motivation. Your physiology can actually affect your psychology."
But there's a spiritual application as well. He referenced Romans 12:1 about how we should offer our "bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God."
He gives three areas for how to improve your body from a biblical standpoint:
1. Cleanse your body by watching what you put into it, for 2 Corinthians 7:1 says “Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit."
2. God cares about us taking care of our own bodies, for Ephesians 5:29 says, “No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church”
3. Have self-control, for 1 Thessalonians 4:4 says, “Each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable.”
Is he making some good points here?
