CNN was hit with a massive blow Monday evening after Project Veritas released undercover video footage they had captured of a supervising producer admitting that CNN cares little for journalistic efforts, focuses on the Trump-Russia collusion theory despite having little faith in it themselves, and intentionally scrutinizes President Trump far more than they ever did with President Obama.
The cable news network is downplaying the impact of the video, according to the Hollywood Reporter, insisting that their producer was simply expressing a personal opinion.
CNN host Brian Stelter wrote on Twitter: “CNN stands by our medical producer John Bonifield. Diversity of personal opinion is what makes CNN strong, we welcome it & embrace it."
It’s hard to imagine Bonifield being embraced by his employers right now for confirming what Trump and conservatives have long believed about the “counterfeit news network.” For the most part, CNN appears to be ignoring the story, hoping it goes away. But that’s been hard to do after the Veritas video became the #1 trending video on YouTube Tuesday afternoon.
Despite the mainstream media downplaying or ignoring the video for the early part of the day, they were forced to acknowledge it when Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders mentioned it during her press briefing and addressed the dangerous world it presents.
Responding to a reporter’s question about the Trump-Russia collusion story CNN recently had to retract, Sanders quickly redirected the conversation to the Veritas video.
“There’s a video circulating now, whether it’s accurate or not, I don’t know. But I would encourage everybody in this room, and frankly, everybody across the country to take a look at it,” she said.
It was a significant step for the White House to take in condemning CNN, and not simply something the cable news network could shrug at and move on. Confidence in CNN’s ability to cover politics in an unbiased, fair manner has been eroding greatly since the presidential campaign as the network increasingly tries to cater to its more liberal viewers. It’s not a great business direction for a company that, according to Bonifield, is far more concerned with money than journalistic ethics and will say just about anything to boost their ratings.
“I think that we have gone to a place where if the media can’t be trusted to report the news, then that’s a dangerous place for America,” Sanders continued. “And I think if that is the place certain outlets are going, particularly for the purpose of spiking ratings, and if that’s coming directly from the top, I think that’s even more scary. And certainly more disgraceful.”
She also blasted the mainstream media’s use of unnamed sources or “no sources at all.” She pointed out that success stories about Trump barely get covered while the Trump-Russia collusion claims get “covered day in and day out.”
“I think America is frankly looking for something better,” she concluded. “They’re looking for something more. And I think they deserve something better from our news media.”
