Hurricane Harvey has laid waste to much of Houston, Texas. Many people have died, and many more have lost their homes and belongings. With shelters rapidly filling and supplies limited, many Americans have been donating to the rebuilding effort. President Trump has personally pledged to donate $1,000,000 of his own money and has earned significant praise from the media for his handling of the crisis.
Vice President Mike Pence has also traveled to Texas to deliver a message of hope. Franklin Graham and other figures have praised the Vice President for what he did after arriving to Texas. In fact, Mike Pence and Franklin Graham joined together, side by side, and personally cleaned up the wreckage together.
So what did he do? As reported yesterday, Pence quickly got to work. In the midst of the 90-degree heat, he joined Texans in rolling up his sleeves and cleaning away the wreckage. You can watch a video of Pence cleaning up the wreckage below.
Before rolling up his sleeves, Mike Pence and his wife – along with Franklin Graham – led the country in prayer for the victims and their families, which can be seen below.
Pence's hands on approach to visiting Houston is in sharp contrast to President Trump's recent visit, where he did not visit with victims or roll up his sleeves to help clear away the rubble. It is important to remember, however, that both President Trump and Vice President Pence's visits both had different goals. And it is also important to keep in mind the generous donation that President Trump is giving out of his own personal bank account.
