New details revealed that Walmart and Publix Supermarkets Inc. received recalled products from Country Fresh Orlando LLC. The distribution had already been canceled at BI-LO, Harveys, Winn-Dixie, and Fresco y Mas, but now two more major grocery chains have been added to the list.

The recalled products are fresh cut vegetable packages including diced bell peppers, vegetable kabobs, and creole and fajita mixed, diced vegetables. The products are packaged under the Marketside brand for Walmart, the house brand for Publix Supermarkets Inc., or the Country Fresh brand.

The original recall was issued in early September. Reports identified Southeast Grocers LLC as the recalling entity. The products were recalled for their listeria contamination.

According to the FDA website, Listeria monocytogenes is an “organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” Healthy adults are at a lower risk for fatality, though Listeria can still cause nausea, muscle aches, and a high fever.

The bacteria was discovered when undergoing a routine test.

The FDA said, “The potential for contamination was uncovered as the result of a single routine sample taken at a retail store in Georgia which revealed that the finished product tested contained the bacteria [Listeria monocytogenes].”

The products were shipped to stores across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Max Payen, Country Fresh’s Director of Food Safety, released a statement about the incident.

He said, “We are treating this incident very seriously because we want to ensure that our customers are provided with only the safest, most wholesome, and high-quality products available.”

The recalled products from Southeastern Grocers are Fajita Blend 12oz, Stir Fry Vegetable, Vegetable Kabob, Green Pepper Diced 6oz, Creole Mix 6oz, Tri-Pepper Dice 6oz, and the Fajita Mix 6oz. The recalled product from Publix Supermarket is the Kabob Sensations Veggie Kabob 15oz. The recalled products from Walmart are Dice Tri-Pepper 7oz and Marketside Veggie Kabobs 23oz. All of the products were distributed between 8/18-8/20

Consumers who have purchased any of the above products should return them immediately for a full refund or throw it out. If you have eaten the recalled products, Food Safety News advises that you seek medical attention. It can take up to 70 days after exposure to develop symptoms from this bacteria. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, loss of balance, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
