On early Wednesday morning, Hurricane Maria made a ferocious landfall in Puerto Rico. The Category 4 hurricane already hit several other smaller islands, but the devastation it is projected to bring Puerto Rico is the worst the island has seen in decades.
The “extremely dangerous” storm made landfall near Yabucoa, Puerto Rico on the southeast coast. The winds were up to 155 mph, and are projected to continue for 12-24 hours.
Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello said, “This is going to be an extremely violent phenomenon. We have not experienced an event of this magnitude in our modern history.”
The last Category 4 storm to make direct landfall in Puerto Rico took place in 1932. Since then, storms have weakened or turned paths before hitting the island. Maria, however, has not relented. Some are saying that this could even top the record-setting destruction from the 1930s.
As the storm approached, power outages spiked and many people fled to shelters. Reportedly, more than 10,050 people and 189 pets were in shelters as of early Wednesday.
Before hitting Puerto Rico, Maria brought extreme destruction to other islands in the Caribbean. So far, there have been reports of at least one death and two people missing. Additionally, about 40% of Guadeloupe homes are without power.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica saw “widespread devastation” as well. He said, “The winds are merciless! We shall survive by the grace of God.”
President Trump offered support to Puerto Rico, where the storm will continue to move through for the next several hours.
He said, “Puerto Rico being hit hard by new monster Hurricane. Be careful, our hearts are with you- will be there to help!”
The storm is supposed to worsen around 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. ET when the eye of the storm hits the east coast of the island. We will continue to update as information is released.
Please be praying for everyone in the path of Hurricane Maria and for those who have already lost loved ones and homes. Share your prayers on Facebook. Recently, destruction has been sweeping across Mexico City as well, as an earthquake caused hundreds of deaths yesterday. Please be praying for everyone in the area.
