On Tuesday, “The View” hosts Sunny Hostin and Whoopi Goldberg had a heated discussion about the moral issues surrounding politics. Hostin, a pro-life Democrat, claimed that the Democratic Party needs to reclaim their moral efforts.
The discussion was spurred on because of several reports that came out on Monday about the Democratic Party. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman Ben Ray Lujan said that Democrats need to choose candidates based on their districts, regardless if they are pro-choice or pro-life.
Hostin went on her show to discuss this change, and to admit that she is a pro-life Democrat. She said that she received much backlash for this view point until she said that she is advocating for her party to “set the moral objective for the country.” Rather than discussing those “moral objective” in terms of being pro-life, Hostin said that the focus should be on other agendas.
She said, “The Republicans should not have the corner on setting the moral objective for the country. It’s time for Democrats to embrace- because if you really are looking at Jesus’ words, the most important things to him were justice and mercy, so real biblical sort of perspectives are saving the earth…welcoming strangers, taking care of the poor.”
Whoopi interrupted Hostin and asked what someone would think about that if they were not a Christian and those words did not hold the same amount of power to them. She continued by sharing her views on pro-life, claiming that anyone who is pro-life has never been in a situation where they have had to consider getting an abortion before.
Hostin’s response to Goldberg was that people get too “caught up” on the abortion issue and that Jesus was more concerned about other things.
She said, “But my point is, everybody sort of gets caught up, especially Evangelicals and Catholics as well and people of- Christians get caught up on the abortion issue, but if you really are a faithful person, if you really are a follower of the Bible and a follower of Jesus, again, the most important issues are justice and mercy. The most important issues are caring for the poor, welcoming strangers, caring for our Earth.”
After this, the show went to a commercial break and the discussion never resumed.
