Donald Trump Jr. has been getting a lot of attention from the mainstream media lately, especially from liberals eager to use his latest Russia admission as a way to topple his dad over the ongoing President Trump-Russia collusion theory. And now President Obama’s former attorney general Loretta Lynch is getting blamed.
On Tuesday, Trump Jr. released e-mails from June 2016 of a planned meeting with a Russian lawyer to discuss allegedly incriminating dealings then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had with Russia, according to the UK’s The Guardian. The person trying to setup the meeting felt the information would be useful to Trump’s dad during the campaign.
Trump Jr. had the meeting, which he said afterwards was simply a waste of time. In retrospect, he told Fox talk show host Sean Hannity that he could have handled the situation better and that his dad knew nothing about it. On Thursday, President Trump defended his son’s action, labeling it as opposition research typical of presidential campaigns.
"My son is a wonderful young man. He took a meeting with a Russian lawyer, not a government lawyer but a Russian lawyer. It was a short meeting. From a practical standpoint, most people would have taken that meeting. It's called opposition research or even research into your opponent," Trump said during a press conference in France, according to Fox News, calling those types of meetings an ugly but common part of politics.
He added that “Zero happened from the meeting. And, honestly, I think the press made a very big deal over something that really a lot of people would do.”
But then he turned on Lynch, putting blame for the meeting on her as well.
He pointed out that the lawyer was in the “halls of Congress,” too, and added “somebody said that her visa or her passport to come into the country was approved by Attorney General Lynch. Maybe that’s wrong. I just heard that a little while ago.”
“I was a little surprised to hear that,” he added. “So she was here because of Lynch.”
He was referencing reports that the Russian lawyer got special treatment from Obama’s State Department to get into the country. That possibility falls in line with conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh’s theory that the whole meeting was a setup to make the Trump family look bad.
