Donald Trump has long said on the campaign trail that the United States will build a border wall during his presidency and that Mexico will pay for the wall. Critics, pundits, and even the ex-president of Mexico have all scoffed at the notion. The wall was declared to be unrealistic and impossible. Trump was repeatedly asked how he would get the wall built despite such hostility from Mexico.
On Tuesday, Trump’s exact plan for the wall came to light when the Washington Post received and released a memo from Trump’s campaign highlighting the steps that will be taken to secure the border under a Trump presidency.
Trump proposes that Mexico pay a one-time fee of $5 - 10 billion dollars, which is a small figure when taken into account that illegal aliens living in the United States send approximately $24 billion dollars back home to family members in Mexico.
If Mexico rejects the one-time payment, Trump proposes a rule in which no person may send money out of the country in which they cannot first prove that they are in the United States lawfully and legally. Trump also said that “Immigration is a privilege, not a right” and proposes cancelling or suspending visa applications until Mexico complies.
“Mexico has taken advantage of us in another way as well,” Trump’s memo says. “Gangs, drugs, traffickers, cartels have freely exploited our open borders and committed vast numbers of crimes in the United States. The United States has borne the extraordinary daily cost of this criminal activity, including the cost of trials and incarceration. Not to mention the even greater human cost.”
The wall will be built and will be paid for by Mexico because as Trump puts it, “We have the moral high ground here, and all the leverage. It is time we use it in order to Make America Great Again.”
