California is in the middle of what has been described as “one of the worst disasters in California’s history,” as first responders continue to fight off massive wildfires and rescue those at risk who were unable to escape this disastrous situation. Nearly 2 dozen different fires have swept across various parts of the West Coast state, destroying almost everything in their path.
According to NBC News, the death toll has risen to at least 31 as of Friday morning. In addition, hundreds still remaining missing and thousands of homes, businesses, and properties have been demolished.
Sadly, these numbers are expected to increase until the fires are completely contained.
Among the dozens of lives lost include a 14-year-old boy named Kai from Redwood Valley, California. Kai’s 17-year-old sister and parents remain in the hospital and are being treated for serious burns and other injuries, KTVU reported.
Local news sources confirmed that the family attempted to escape the rapidly growing fire by driving, but the vehicle eventually caught on fire, forcing them to attempt to flee on foot.
A neighbor, who survived the massive heat of the flames, found the family. Kai was already dead, and the father was further down the mountain trying to get help, but the neighbor was able to keep the women comfortable until first responders arrived on the scene.
KTVU stated that the mother and daughter are unable to talk. It is also unclear if the family is aware of Kai’s death.
The family has lost their home (which was uninsured), vehicle, and other possessions. A fundraiser has been started for them; the fund has received over $75,000 but is hoping to raise at least $100,000. If you would like to contribute, please visit their website here.
