On Monday morning, an explosion took place near Times Square at the Port Authority bus terminal and subway. The station is located at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue.
According to the NYPD, the source of the explosion was a man wearing a homemade bomb, believed to have been a pipe bomb. Preliminary reports suggest that the bomb either malfunctioned or at least did not go off as it was intended to.
The belief that the bomb was not detonated as planned is due to the fact that there were no deaths in the attack. However, there were at least four injuries.
Detectives are calling this an attempted terrorist attack, and the man was believed to have been a suicide bomber. The suspect was immediately taken into custody after the incident.
According to CBS News, the suspect has been identified as 27-year-old Akayed Ullah. The suspect is reportedly from Bangladesh. He sustained injuries in the explosion and was found with a second device that never detonated.
According to the Daily Best, Ullah came to the United States seven years ago and currently resides in Brooklyn. Little information has been revealed thus far about his motive in this attempted attack.
Thankfully, no one died as a result of this attack. However, it was a scary incident for those in transit. The Port Authority terminal is considered one of the busiest in the United States during commuter times.
