The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been known to use social media outlets to recruit militants and display their acts of terror. Recently, their vanity proved to be their downfall.
Last week the United States Air Force destroyed an ISIS headquarters building with a strategic bomb strike. They had been led to the building by an unlikely source; an ISIS terrorist himself.
According to this defensetech.org article, General Hawk Carlisle described how the terrorist turned himself into a target, “The guys that were working down out of Hurlburt, they’re combing through social media and they see some moron standing at this command. And in some social media, open forum, bragging about the command and control capabilities for Daesh, ISIL”
Twenty two hours after the terrorist “selfie” the 361st Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group sent three bombs through the command building. “It was a post on social media to bombs on target in less than 24 hours”, General Carlisle said.
Warfare is evolving. It is no longer relegated to the battlefields. It is being openly conducted over the internet and social media. The United States government has taken notice and is taking full advantage of all available means to fight the enemy.
