Oregon already has some of the most liberal abortion laws in the nation, but soon taxpayer dollars in Oregon are going to cover all abortions. They’ve even allocated five-hundred thousand dollars to pay for abortions for illegal immigrants who aren’t otherwise covered.
“The $10.2 million bill, which cleared the state House and Senate with no Republican votes, also comes as a badly needed boost for Planned Parenthood’s Oregon affiliate, which helped write the measure and pushed for its passage as it struggles to keep its doors open,” writes The Washington Times.
The fact that Planned Parenthood was involved in writing the bill highlights the desired effect of the bill: more abortions and more money for Planned Parenthood. Gayle Atteberry, executive director of Oregon Right to Life, pointed this out, saying that the Democratic majority is “working to reward one of their primary campaign supporters, Planned Parenthood, which stands to financially benefit from HB 3391-B.”
Atteberry continues, “This terrible legislation is just another example of how Oregon’s largest abortion provider’s only real concern is for their financial bottom line.”
In fact, in the past 14 years, according to state health records, Oregon’s already loose abortion restrictions mean nearly $24 million in state funds have been spent on more than 52,000 abortions, reports the Catholic News Agency.
CNA also points out something that makes this particular dangerous: it places absolutely no restrictions on why an abortion is being chosen. “While some states allow for cost-free abortions that are deemed medically necessary, the Oregon bill allows for coverage of abortions for virtually any reason, including sex-selective and late-term abortions.”
Earlier in the year, Oregon Republicans tried to pass a law that would prevent late-term abortions “performed solely because of the known or suspected sex of an unborn child.” However, they were unable to pass the bill because Democrats deemed it racist—as targeting Asian immigrants who have cultures that prefer a male child, partially because of the one-child policy in China.
The bill has a provision which allows Oregon’s second largest health care provider, Providence Health, to not offer abortion coverage. This would, in theory, respect the Catholic company’s religious liberty. However, Oregonian Catholics and other Christians opposed to abortion will still be funding abortions through their tax dollars. The state will simply do the reimbursing instead of the insurance company.
Democrats in Oregon also hope that their bill will show President Trump their resistance. “Planned Parenthood’s annual half-billion dollars in federal funding in peril as President Trump and congressional Republicans ramp up calls to defund the 100-year-old organization,” and Oregonian Democrats want to make sure their biggest donor still has funding in their state.
Democrat Pam Marsh says, “The bill also plants a clear flag: Regardless of any possible federal action to come, the state of Oregon will protect reproductive health care rights for all residents.”
But Senate Republicans know that the bill is less about women’s rights and more about money. After the vote, they issued a statement saying the bill is "nothing more than a political statement and a political gift card to Planned Parenthood that brought unnecessary drama and divisiveness to the end of the legislative session."
The bill is expected to be signed into law in the next thirty days. Please pray for our the babies that will lose their lives because of this bill, and all the men and women who will be permanently scarred by abortion.
