Cruz Accuses DOJ of ‘Aggressively Targeting’ Pro-Life Activists

FIRST IN THE DAILY SIGNAL — Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is accusing the Division of Justice of “aggressively concentrating on” pro-life activists whereas failing to correctly examine the slew of assaults on pro-life being pregnant facilities all through the nation.

On Tuesday, a Washington, D.C., jury convicted 5 pro-life activists (Lauren Helpful, Herb Geraghty, Heather Idoni, William Goodman, and John Hinshaw) of violating the Freedom of Entry to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act once they sought to stop the abortions of unborn infants by blocking ladies from accessing a D.C. abortion clinic in 2020.

Helpful and Geraghty are activists with the Progressive Anti-Abortion Rebellion (PAAU).

The Justice Division’s Affiliate Legal professional Normal Vanita Gupta stated in December 2022 that the DOJ is concentrating on pro-life activists by the FACE Act as a response to the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Her remarks adopted on the heels of Republican accusations that the DOJ is unduly concentrating on pro-life activists like Catholic father Mark Houck.

Cruz reacted in an announcement to The Day by day Sign, noting that at least 88 U.S. pregnancy centers “have been firebombed, vandalized, or set ablaze within the wake of the Dobbs choice.”

“DOJ’s response to this violence has been anemic, having solely prosecuted a single FACE Act case in opposition to these criminals,” the senator stated. “Nevertheless, and in stark distinction, the DOJ has introduced your complete weight and pressure of the FBI in opposition to those who have interaction in non-violent protest at abortion clinics.”

“Yesterday, the DOJ convicted Lauren Helpful and 4 different abortion protestors for participating in non-violent protest,” the Texas Republican stated. “They now face 11 years in federal jail and a superb of as much as $350,000.”

Cruz believes that Helpful has been focused by the DOJ attributable to her pro-life activism, notably associated to her dealings with D.C. abortionist Cesare Santangelo, who operates out of a Foggy Backside abortion clinic.

Santangelo didn’t reply to requests for remark for this story.

“The DOJ has been aggressively concentrating on Helpful since she and others blew the whistle on an abortion physician in Washington D.C., who was participating in unlawful, late-term abortions,” Cruz stated.

“Once you evaluate how aggressively DOJ treats pro-life protesters like Lauren Helpful and Mark Houck versus the hand-off strategy it takes to people who burn and vandalize church buildings and being pregnant facilities, it’s apparent that Garland has completely politicized our federal regulation enforcement and our system of justice,” the senator stated. “He ought to resign.”

In March 2022, the DOJ charged Helpful and eight others with “conspiracy in opposition to rights and a [Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances] Act offense.”

Helpful has stated that she was motivated to cease abortions from occurring contained in the clinic after she seen an undercover video revealed by the pro-life group Stay Motion that allegedly confirmed Santangelo discussing how he would permit infants to die in the event that they had been by accident delivered throughout abortions.

In March 2022, Helpful and her colleague Terrisa Bukovinac discovered the bodies of five preemie-sized aborted babies’ bodies in a field of fetal stays outdoors the Foggy Backside-based abortion facility. That field additionally contained over 100 pulverized stays of first-trimester infants, they stated.

The District doesn’t have any legal guidelines that regulate how late throughout being pregnant a child could be aborted. So when the infants’ our bodies had been initially dropped at gentle, D.C. police initially shrugged off the matter.

Ashan Benedict, the Metropolitan Police Division’s govt assistant chief of police, went as far as to inform reporters in April 2022 that the infants appeared to have been aborted “in accordance with D.C. regulation.”

Police have repeatedly advised The Day by day Sign since then that the case remains to be “below investigation.” Authorities won’t share whether or not autopsies have been carried out on the infants’ stays. The MPD confirmed in early August that the investigation remains to be open.

The mayor’s workplace has utterly stonewalled questions concerning the infants. Even the workplace of the chief medical expert for the District of Columbia directs queries to the mayor’s workplace—particularly, to Dora Taylor-Lowe, a spokeswoman for the mayor’s workplace, who refuses to reply The Day by day Sign’s requests for remark.

In April 2022, Cruz had called on Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser to protect the stays of the infants as “proof for future Congressional oversight hearings.”

“It’s a clear injustice that these kids might have been murdered or aborted in violation of federal regulation, and that the D.C. authorities entities that this Congress oversees are unwilling to research the circumstance and should as an alternative destroy all proof,” Cruz stated on the time.

“It seems that the Metropolitan Police Division has assumed the trigger and nature of those kids’s deaths with out an investigation,” he added. “It has lately been dropped at my consideration that the D.C. authorities might incinerate the our bodies of those 5 kids with out conducting an investigation, with out performing any autopsies, and with out affording these kids a correct, respectful burial.”

The Texas Republican requested that the D.C. Medical Examiner conduct an post-mortem of every of the “5 kids’s our bodies.” The investigation, he stated, must be “in step with the kind of technique and element that might be carried out in a homicide investigation.”

It stays unclear whether or not autopsies have been carried out on the our bodies of the 5 infants, whose our bodies had been photographed by Bukovinac. (Warning: These images are graphic and disturbing.) Some pro-lifers concern that town might have gotten rid of them.

But, though Bowser refuses to handle the chance that Santangelo was criminally aborting late-term infants within the nation’s capital, she did accuse Helpful of “tampering with fetal stays” in an April 2022 letter to Republican lawmakers highlighting that Helpful herself confronted FACE Act fees for blocking the doorway to a D.C. abortion clinic in October 2020.

Helpful’s involvement within the discovery of the infants, in addition to her participation within the October 2020 “blockade,” in response to Bowser, are probably “severe violations of federal regulation.”
