Houston police announced on Thursday that a six-week-old baby girl, who was the subject of an AMBER alert after her mother was found murdered, has been found unharmed, reported local network KHOU. According to the Houston Police Department, 6-week-old Shamali Flores appeared to be unharmed but was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
Police also solved the mystery of why Shamali's mother, Carolina Flores, was murdered. They say they believe the murderer took the baby girl in an attempt to cover up her own miscarriage.
The suspect, Erica Miranda-Alvarez, 28, has been charged with the murder of the baby's mother. Police say Miranda-Alvarez knew the victim through the victim's brother.
Police, along with SWAT officers and FBI, arrested Miranda-Alvarez outside an apartment complex building around 1 a.m. Thursday. At the time of her arrest, the woman's boyfriend was with her. At this time, he remains under investigation but has not been charged with any crimes.
Shamali's mother, Carolina Flores, was found fatally stabbed Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, the FBI and Equusearch joined police in the search for her missing child. A $5,000 reward was being offered for information on Shamali's whereabouts.
At the time, HPD Chief Art Acevedo said they had a new theory about who took the child. Previously, they had suspected the baby's father.
“We really believe based on what we’ve seen so far that this suspect who has this child is familiar with this family and familiar with this neighborhood. The individual who abducted Shamali may be a woman who has or will present the child as their own, and may even indicate the child was recently born. Think about anyone who has a child that you weren’t aware they were pregnant. Also think about people that may have lost a child recently. Women or families that may have lost a child recently. That might be someone we may be interested in talking to,” said Acevedo.
Praise the Lord that this sweet baby girl is safe! May God continue to protect her as she grows up without her mother.
