Singer of Top 1970s Song Dies at 72

Michael Johnson, singer and guitarist, passed away at age 72 on Tuesday, July 25th. The news about his death was not released until later on Wednesday, July 26th.

Johnson was best known for his hit song “Bluer than Blue.” The song reach #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978 and #1 on other music charts. According to Rolling Stone, he had other number one hit songs such as "Give Me Wings" and "The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder." The celebrity news site also mentions that he was an “accomplished classical guitarist.”

His music is described as showing "diversity, depth and heart that only come from years of dedication to a labor of love." Fans and others in the music industry also shared heartwarming thoughts about him. One referred to Johnson as "exceptionally talented."

A statement was posted on Johnson’s website, “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I share the sad news of Michael's passing Tuesday evening after a long illness.” Specific details of the illness were not released.
