A self-proclaimed conservative Christian mother is sharing her story of transgender acceptance, and while some see her journey as praiseworthy, for others it's deeply troubling.
According to ABC 13, Kimberly Shappley of Pearland, Texas tells the story of her 5-year-old son who she is finally accepting as a girl and is fighting to get his school to treat as a girl as well. She said it began when Joseph was three and expressed a desire to wear girls clothes. Although Kimberly initially denied his requests, Joseph soon began to tell other people he was a girl and gave himself the girl's name of "Kai."
"This hasn't happened overnight for us. I am a Christian and I love the Lord," Kimberly said.
But Kimberly finally acquiesced when she heard "Kai" begging Jesus to let Joseph die and go to heaven. Although she found it incredibly difficult at the time, Kimberly went to the store and bought him the girls underwear he had been asking for.
"When Kai came home that day and opened the drawer and saw princess panties, she fell down on the floor with the panties, crying and thanking me that this was the best day ever," Kimberly relates.
As an ordained minister, how did Kimberly justify her new choice with her faith?
According to ABC News, she said, "I chose to stick with the words in red in the Bible, the words that Jesus spoke. I clung to those words, prayed and fasted — and the Lord just helped me to be my kid's mom."
Although she sought the help of pastors, Kimberly said none of them would accept Joseph's choice to be a girl as biblical. She said through social media she eventually found a large group of other Christian women who also struggled with "transgender" children and had gotten to the point of condoning their lifestyles.
But Kimberly took her acceptance a step further and has been battling her local school district to allow Joseph to use the girls bathroom in kindergarten.
She said that "it soon became very apparent that the superintendent has a very strong, prejudiced stance against the LGBTQ community."
According to Education Action Group, she also blamed the school district of far worse than discrimination.
“You are increasing the risk of suicide among these children,” she accused the school board.
According to the Houston Chronicle, she also said, "I am a mom of a little girl who I want to live. I'm fighting for her happiness. I'm fighting for her freedom."
The school district's superintendent John Kelly has been adamantly against the Obama administration's new rules to open up all school facilities to either gender based on their "gender identity."
In a letter to the Obama administration, he wrote, “In my personal opinion, this is one more example of unconstitutional interference and social engineering by the federal government. When the Supreme Court re-defined marriage and invented new constitutional rights, the door was open for re-defining all social norms, now including Executive Branch dictates about bathroom and locker room rules in local schools."
He added, “It is astonishing to watch the flip flop by leaders who 10 years ago strongly endorsed traditional marriage. A hostile vocal minority now rules in America aided by an apathetic, unengaged majority. What’s next? Legalizing pedophilia and polygamy? Unless we return to the Biblical basis on which our nation’s laws were established, we are in serious trouble — and cannot expect God’s continued favor.”
