Reports confirmed that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer resigned after a major disagreement with President Trump. The New York Times appeared to be the originator of this news; however, multiple other news outlets also picked up the story including the Associated Press' sources.

According to the Times, Trump recently appointed New York financier Anthony Scaramucci as his communications director and offered him the job at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 21st of 2017. Spicer reportedly disagreed with Trump’s decision so much that he handed in his resignation in protest, according to one of the Times’ sources.

Yahoo! Finance pointed out that Scaramucci has served in the past as both an adviser and campaign fundraiser for Trump. He replaces Mike Dubke, who resigned in May. Scaramucci is a respected friend of some members of the Trump family and has known the president for years.

In the recently restructured press office, a newly appointed communications director would have reported directly to Spicer. Politico is reporting that Scaramucci's appointment was strongly opposed by White House Chief of Staff Reince Preibus and Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon as well. Politico's source, who they say is a top White House official, told them, "This was a murdering of Reince and Bannon. They said Anthony would get this job over their dead bodies."

Spicer has recently had a less visible role in Trump’s administration with Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders taking over many of the daily press briefings. Most of her recently briefings have not been televised, which has angered some in the press.

After Spicer's resignation was released to the public, Spicer posted a personal statement via Twitter. He said, "It's been an honor & a privilege to serve @POTUS @realDonaldTrump & this amazing country. I will continue my service through August."
